Metaheuristics are proven solutions for complex optimization problems. Recently, bio-inspired metaheuristics have shown their capabilities solving engineering The Whale Optimization Algorithm is a popular metaheuristic, which based on the hunting behavior of whale. For some problems, this algorithm suffers from local minima entrapment. To make WOA compatible with number challenging two major modifications proposed in paper: first one opposition-based learning initialization phase, while second inculcation Cauchy mutation operator position updating phase. variant named Augmented (AWOA) and tested over benchmark suits, i.e., classical functions latest CEC-2017 10 dimension 30 Various analyses, including convergence property analysis, boxplot analysis Wilcoxon rank sum test show that possesses better exploration exploitation capabilities.
